Instead of setting up my backup VJ laptop just to view an NDI stream on the "management" TV and couch setup during artist rehearsals—which felt like overkill—I revisited my Raspberry Pi 4 project. I originally chose the Pi 4 for its composite output to drive a CRT array that never materialized.

I decided to test out Dicaffeine again, and great news: it works flawlessly! If you're considering this setup, I highly recommend starting with a fresh Raspberry Pi OS image and following the installation instructions carefully. I had to use the NDI-HX option to get everything running smoothly.

I'm really pleased this solution still holds up. I was contemplating alternatives like the mixed reviews on the Apple TV NDI App or snagging a Birddog Play on eBay. Hopefully, this helps enhance your Resolume setup—it's compact enough to toss into your gig bag!

Resolume Wire Patch for Synesthesia Control

I love how easy Spout makes routing video between VJing applications. I don't love how complicated Windows 11 makes handling using a single MIDI device with multiple apps. In a somewhat complicated workaround, I resigned myself to using a single MIDI controller mapped to Resolume exclusively where I would have OSC options to control the other relevant apps. Thanks to Resolume Wire and the Synesthesia documentation, I finally got my feature working!

This is my first Wire Patch released for general use so I'm a bit hesitant before opening everything up. Looking for any general feedback or confirmation of a use case, while a bit tedious, this same sort of mapping can be used for any Resolume adjacent app for consolidated controls (NestDrop, Fragment Flow, Cathodemer, etc.).

Using Live VJ Tools in G-Funk Music Video

Ever since the start of my VJ career, I have often been asked "do you do music videos?" This video for the artist Funk Fiction track "G-Funk Sonic - Oil Ocean Zone" was recently released and features a workflow we invented along the way that utilized a number of real-time VJ tools in what is traditionally a non-linear edit style.

Most prominently, the final distressing of a "VHS emulation" style shader effect utilized in Synesthesia was utilized both for aesthetic cohesion and to mirror a final mastering process in the audio. The final audio mixes are fed into tape as a way to add warmth and pleasant analog artifacts. Inspiration from this audio process led to discussions with the artist to also do the same but with a final video distressing as a way to sell the experience as a dusted off discovery of a lost media cassette. The final creative call to change the edit towards the end of the creative process to a 4:3 aspect ratio was also a result of the same discussions.

Ghosteamlive is used at 0:31 for video repetition and CRT effects to act as a visual bridge between backyard iPhone footage with the rest of the music video.

In a very similar process and workflow, Volta is also used at 1:23 and 1:35 for a same-but-different CRT look.

Motion graphics and release art superimposition done in Davinci Resolve, along with the rest of the edit. I'll need to remind myself to leave 5 seconds of empty frames at the end of videos intended for YouTube distribution so the bumpers don't overlap with intended content.

Overall the project served as a fascinating intersection of two generations, as evident in the comment section: "old heads" who experienced the g-funk genre first hand in the cultural loops of the late 1990s and (with some overlap) gamers who experienced the same music through San Andres and the culture of Grand Theft Auto 5.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a 2x2 overview in 4k is worth at least a million words on an invoice, right?

Jokes aside, here is my funny take on DJing the song "Wasureranaino" by Sakanaction in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles March 2024. The background video is the official music video release and the lyrics and animation layer is a custom asset I authored in Davinci Resolve. I had to make a compromise and leave out the English meaning translation, but I instead opted to present the pronounced lyrics in both Japanese and what's referred to in Japanese as "roomaji" or Roman-script (yes a bit of a misnomer). As an artist and mixed Japanese person this is a very personal bridge of cultures all wrapped up in the presentation of a DJ set 🫡

The technology stack depicted is TCSupply ShowKontrol providing cues sending OSC to Resolume for visual production impacts like virtual confetti. Resolume file is setup in a simple linear style with mostly music videos prepared at the same length as the audio track. DJ performance setup is (2) Pioneer CDJNXS2 and (1) Pioneer DJM900NXS2 with all Pioneer equipment, Resolume laptop, ShowKontrol laptop, on an unmanaged gigabit switch (169.x.x.x default non-DHCP addressing).

While the majority of my career is on big screens supporting an artist as a VJ, it's fun to reconnect with smaller rooms using the same technology and getting to DJ/VJ myself!

Recently one of the events I was supporting featured two artists in what's called a "B2B" or a "Back To Back" in the DJ world. One of the artists used a logo incorporating the Old School RuneScape logo styling, and I was so inspired by the asset I had to make a few additional layers to compliment!

With Resolume's recent Grid Cloner visual effects tool, I was able to quickly take extracted game tiles at low resolutions and get a smooth background look. This paired with prominent weapons from the game (Blender 4.1, Eevee) lends to a very simple and liminal look that is a great start to augmenting with various video effects.

During the pre-pandemic times I VJed a 420 Rave at a DIY warehouse venue in Downtown Los Angeles. I dragged a projector up a flight of unpermitted stairs to animate a themed glyph that was commissioned from a big green scene tattoo artist. Towards the end of the night it became hard to breathe in the upstairs loft area, cough, cough. The organizer DMed me once events started back up but the VJ budget was still up in smoke.
