Roto Control - The Ultimate MIDI Controller for VJs from Melbourne Instruments

As a VJ, you know the importance of seamless control over your visuals, lighting rigs, and software setups. Whether you're syncing video loops with music or triggering effects on the fly, having the right tools can make all the difference. Enter Roto-Control, a game-changing motorized MIDI controller from Melbourne Instruments that’s designed to elevate your live performance workflow. Compact, versatile, and packed with innovative features, this device is here to transform how you interact with both hardware and software.

Why VJs Need Roto-Control

For VJs, precision and adaptability are key. You need a controller that not only integrates effortlessly with your favorite media applications but also offers tactile feedback and customizable controls. With its combination of motorized knobs, high-res displays, and three distinct operation modes, Roto-Control bridges the gap between hands-on creativity and digital flexibility. Let’s dive into what makes this device stand out—and why it’s perfect for VJs.

1. Motorized Knobs with Haptic Feedback

At the heart of Roto-Control are its 8 touch-sensitive motorized knobs, which provide unparalleled control over parameters in real time. These aren’t just ordinary knobs—they come alive with haptic feedback, giving you physical resistance that mimics the feel of analog equipment. This feature is especially useful for VJs who want precise adjustments when tweaking visual effects, color grading, or layer opacity.

The best part? Each knob has an accompanying high-resolution LCD screen that dynamically updates to show labels, values, and even custom names. No more guessing what each knob does—everything is clearly displayed at a glance, keeping your focus where it belongs: on your visuals.

2. Three Modes of Operation for Maximum Versatility

MIX Mode: Seamless Integration with Ableton Live

If you’re using Ableton Live as part of your VJ setup (and let’s face it, many do), MIX mode is a dream come true. It automatically syncs with your Ableton session, pulling track names and colors directly onto Roto-Control’s displays. Imagine being able to mix audio tracks while simultaneously controlling video clips—all without ever taking your eyes off the controller.

PLUGIN Mode: Effortless Plugin Control

In PLUGIN mode, Roto-Control lets you map plugin parameters with ease. Simply press “LEARN,” adjust the parameter you want to control, and voilà—it’s assigned! Once learned, these settings are stored locally on the device, so they’re ready to go no matter which computer or rig you’re working with. For VJs juggling multiple plugins for video processing, generative art, or lighting control, this mode streamlines your workflow like never before.

MIDI Mode: Total Command Over Hardware & Software

Perhaps the most exciting mode for VJs is MIDI mode, which allows you to take full control of external gear and software. From synths and DAWs to lighting consoles and media servers, Roto-Control communicates via standard MIDI protocols. What sets it apart is its ability to store up to 64 MIDI setups, each containing up to 64 control assignments. Need to switch between different rigs mid-performance? Just load a preset and keep going.

And don’t forget about the Motion Recorder function—a creative tool that lets you automate and loop MIDI parameters. Use it to create dynamic lighting sequences, synchronize video effects, or generate evolving textures in your visuals. With step recording lengths ranging from 16 to 64 steps and various playback modes (forward, backward, random, ping-pong), Motion Recorder adds a whole new dimension to your performances.

3. Compact Design, Big Impact

Despite its powerful capabilities, Roto-Control is surprisingly compact and portable. Its sleek design fits easily into any studio or stage setup, making it ideal for VJs who travel frequently. Plus, with dual USB-C ports for power and data transfer, along with traditional 5-pin MIDI DIN connectors, connectivity is never an issue.

4. Customization Galore with Roto-Setup App

To truly unlock the potential of Roto-Control, pair it with the Roto-Setup app. This companion software lets you fine-tune every aspect of your controller, from naming knobs and buttons to setting min/max values and defining haptic responses. You can even import and export presets, allowing you to share configurations with fellow VJs or quickly adapt to new projects.

How Roto-Control Enhances Your VJ Workflow

Here’s how Roto-Control can supercharge your performances:

  • Sync Visuals with Music: Use MIX mode to align your visuals with audio tracks in Ableton Live, ensuring perfect harmony between sound and sight.
  • Automate Complex Effects: Leverage Motion Recorder to pre-program intricate lighting or video transitions, freeing you up to focus on other aspects of your set.
  • Control Multiple Devices Simultaneously: Switch between MIDI setups to manage everything from projectors to LED walls, all from one intuitive interface.
  • Stay Organized On-the-Fly: With instant parameter recall and clear labeling, you’ll never lose track of what you’re controlling—even during the most chaotic gigs.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a seasoned VJ or just starting out, Roto-Control is a must-have addition to your toolkit. Its blend of cutting-edge technology, user-friendly design, and unmatched versatility makes it the ultimate MIDI controller for modern performers. Say goodbye to clunky interfaces and hello to effortless creativity.

Motorized Systemes!!!
I have to add that I've only had very bad experiences with motorized faders etc. Because these small steps or servo electric motors are maximum sensitive and if you accidentally grab it from time to time during an automated process by hand, the little engine is broken very quickly. Even when switching on such systems, you always have longer waiting times, because all the engines first go to find the zero point, then analyze the control range and only then approach the currently required position and that everything can take up to a full minute or longer and creates a rigien hype.
In that case I would never buy such a controller myself, far too sensitive. If only one motorengine will be broken most likely be issued an error which will make the entire system unusable until this engine repaired and that usually means that you can buy a new device because today's electronicalworkinghouers costs for a technician are so high and you have to disassemble the device of course to replace such an engine.
So my advice: hands off!

And in the end, my dear vdmo-Grig, all the electronic stuff comes from China anyway, except for a few things like my Reso Arena/Avenue plugins: mywix3.wixsite.com/bennoh/post/cod... - what do you say about that!?

Have a nice Sunday!!

Well, at around $500, the device is a bit expensive, although the motor faders are nice and usually not very cheap, but especially since there are apparently no pads at all and there aren't many buttons, it is a luxury controller that is slightly overpriced. But you can still recommend this controller, and the LED displays are also good.
When I was looking for prices, I came across the "Reloop Keypad Pro" controller, which I consider to be much more recommendable for VJs, it only costs around $235 and also offers LED and even OLED displays, no motor faders but I find the features very, very convincing:

If I hadn't bought the very smart "AKAI APC-KEY25" a few years ago at a special storeclosing-sale price of only US$70, I would buy the "Reloop Keypad Pro" straight away💥, it's simply great and very good value for money considering the current situation!!👏👏😜
